So here we are, nearing the end of semester two, 2021 and wrapping up digital marketing, so how do we move forward with what we’ve learnt – whether it be in the (virtual) classroom or through these blog posts?

Tech like computers, phones, software’s, and online platforms are an ever changing and ever-growing commodity, I mean, my friends were showing off their brand-new iPhone 11 in late 2019 and here we are with the iPhone 13 having gone on sale only a week ago. A main criticism of the Apple brand is that their products only feature slight differences each release but with major price points, although some find the updates minimal, it is still learning point for everyone and something we all have to adapt to.
Imagine my embarrassment when my whole life I’ve shown my mum how to use her phone but when she got one without a home button, I was lost. How on earth are you meant to change apps? She showed me with a quick swipe but was still a humbling experience, just because I interact with the modern world every day, doesn’t mean I’m not vulnerable to fumbling technology I’ve never used before.
The key takeaway from that experience is that being a heavy consumer of something paired with my “young” age (unless you are my 14-year-old sister, in which case 21 is ancient) does not necessarily mean I have an understanding, let alone expertise.
Now that we’ve all humbled ourselves, lets use this common
belief to our advantage – this is business after all.
Just because WE know we can’t do e v e r y t h i n g doesn’t stop future employers from thinking so! It’s not your fault they see someone under thirty and think “ah yes, the tech wiz”, so run with the edge they gave you!
Take the job, apply all you know of the
current tech, make an Instagram account like when you were 11 years old, branch
out a little to what all the hip teens are jumping on, and use your
adaptability to create a TikTok profile!
Hi Melina, I enjoyed reading your final blog post! A lovely way to begin to wrap up the semester. One thing I personally find is that trying to read an article/blog post on a computer screen when there are fast moving gifs can be slightly challenging. I agree with the point you made about how feeling like we are experts in all things technology is likely to become outdated thanks to newer technological development and younger generations becoming more clued in to use this technology. I also agree that our current knowledge is still an advantage in the current modern workplace!

ReplyDeleteOh, this is the harsh truth. I tend to pretend I know the most of it and fake it 'til I make it but it really does take constant exposure and the continual willingness to learn. I spend hours of TikTok watching other peoples videos but I have little to no idea on how to make my own. I guess it's time to learn and give it a red hot go! Also, that last gif is hilarious!
